About Island Filigree

The idea behind Island Filigree originated in late 2008. We wanted to share passion for Maltese handmade filigree jewelry and our appreciation to the people who to this very day practise this old craft, which has been passed from generation to generation over hundreds, possibly thousands of years. This website is a means for us to share our traditions with the world, and to provide both information and products for full appreciation of Maltese filigree jewelry.

Our filigree is all made by hand – no exceptions! We source the work from Maltese artisans whom we’ve seen creating jewelry in front of our eyes. Unfortunately we’ve had a bad experience or two with suppliers giving us non-handmade jewelry, so we take super extra care to work with those who actually do make the magic themselves.

Who are we, anyway?

The ‘We’ is made up of Maltese Jeremy Azzopardi and Swedish Amanda Gustafsson. We love history, archaeology,  and, most of all, travelling. I, Jeremy, like working and messing around with the internet, while Amanda is in love with figure skating.

What’s our business setting up this website, you might ask? Well, we both love Malta, its history, and its culture. This is one way of trying to share something of the Maltese culture and heritage, especially since there doesn’t seem to be much at all about Maltese filigree online.

We’ll be adding more information about filigree, how it is made, and also something more about ourselves on the website’s blog.
